'Professor Shammi and Lady Asha' - The Documentary That Didn't Come True

Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh

Two of my favorite Indian cinema stars as a child came across my life in June of 2007 less than a year from my father's departure out of this world. His departure soaked me in depression from which I have not recovered till this very day.  So every once in a while I get involved in fun and/or entertaining projects in an effort to alleviate my depression.

In that June, I read about Asha Parekh's receipt of an award in New York and the hotel at which she stayed. When I called the hotel, I was able to reach and talk with her. It was a wonderful surprise to know that someone I admired from childhood was still alive and active. I anxiously asked her about Shammi Kapoor and she gave me the good news that he was still alive and that she would give me his number if I called her when she returned to Mumbai. I was so appreciative when she gave me her number, so that I contact her and get Shammi's number from her.

The rest of the story is too long, and so I will post its details in another post.  But my later communications with both actors gave birth to an interesting and unique idea or project, which is to produce a documentary film on their life and career, and I even gave it a title, 'Professor Shammi and lady Asha'.

The above video is a shorter version of the video clip that was edited and posted on the INEAS channel on October 20, 2009.  That original nine-minute video clip was produced and posted in celebration of Shammi's birthday  (on October 21) and to promote the film project and welcome funding for it. But unfortunately, we heard from no one. The promotion part and some of my narration were removed, which made the above video shorter. When it was removed today from INEAS channel, it had 612,066 viewers. Also originally, there was no frozen images at the end of the video like you will see in the video posted here. Only two minutes of the final song, Aja Aja, which is one of my favorite old-time songs acted by the two actors, have been frozen. Please watch the song till the end, so you'll see the movements come back to life.
Even after freezing half of the song, it was instantly 'blocked worldwide' when I posted it on youtube! So instead, I posted the video here to keep a record of it.  Watching it may alleviate your gloomy feelings.

Below are the comments that were posted under the original video clip, not necessarily in order. The top two comments were replies by INEAS, the Institute that posted the video:

Though I did not envision money making from this project, I was hoping that at least EROS and the like copyright companies help provide some footage for free or at discount or help in promotion! But this did not seem possible. I feel so bad for Shammi who departed from our world without seeing the film produced.

Thank you for your interest and for asking the right question. Due to lack of funding and enthusiasm by the Indian producing companies, the film has been placed on hold. Unfortunately, EROS international and the like companies have blocked this trailer from view in both India and Nepal. This has discouraged me from continuing the project.

Asha Parekh It is difficult to forget your marvelous acting in your first movie which was DIL Deke Dekho.

@ssmcomp He's such a great entertainer! Energetic and funny (which is often harder to be than beeing serious). I'm german and live in Hamburg where Shammi Kapoor did some sequences of his movie "An evening in Paris".

I have been a Shammi Kapoor fan since I started watching Hindi films at the age of 7 and I'm 57 now. Shammiji was and will always be my favourite simply because the style he possessed could not be found in any other actor past and present. His movies has blessed the Indian Cinema with some of the most beautiful songs. For me he will remain the most entertaining actor of the Indian Cinema. His movies were released for Divali, Christmas, Eid, New Year to attract the biggest crowds.

asha looked so well with all the actors...khanna, shashi, sunil dutt, manoj, dharmendra.jeetendra, joy mukherjee,vishwajeet...and so many more asha was the leading and most goregeous woman of yesteryears and I will remember her forever...This is purely out of respect but as child I wanted to marry her...

thank you for uploading this movie documentary in English...I appreciate it very much as I don't understand Hindi but I am a fan with Hindi classical movies...I hope there will be many more like this in future...thank you again!

Shammi kapur was superb hero

Thank you very much for the lovely movies, and excellent songs, Shammi Kapoor & Asha Parekh we miss you.

Very unfortunate indeed. Love their work, together or with other actors. They brought a sort of change & freshness to the industry that has seen great but monotonous films. They infused a new life & new wave of films (not a film buff, people may excuse if I said something to hurt their sentiment). Loved Shammi's fun ways as well as the serious side that has strange emotional touch; never forget Ashaji in "Do Badan" (an adaptation of chiranjeevulu in Telugu);loved the Hindi version 'coz of her.

I'm interested to know about the progress of your work. Have you completed your documentary?

Film name Bramhachari is pronounced "Bramhaa-Chaaree"

Thanks for updating .... Love you Shammi Ji ..... And Love Mohammed Rafi too .... And Asha parekh, my Fvt Actress ....
